This really isn't a review, per se, as I only saw 3 1/2 bands in about 11 hours, but here are some notes and observations about what turned out to be a very successful first year for the festival:
1. I'm happily ceding victory to Tony as Best BlogJockey in Jax. PJ Pants and I took the laptop route at the Dance Pavilion and suffered through some bizarre mixing issues wherein 90% of our jams came through the PA vocalless. I'm not entirely positive that there wasn't some sabotage going on, but T played Dinosaur, Live Rust-era Neil Young and JSBX so I'm willing to give my suspicions a rest for now. He also garnered a noise complaint within the first 5 minutes of his set, which is an automatic victory in my book. Cheers, Tony!
2. Aside from $3 bottles of water, the prices of food and drink were much more reasonable than any other festival I've been to in Jacksonville or elsewhere. Thumbs up.
3. Note to festival organizers: Next year, please exercise some discretion over which visual artists you allow to show at the festival.
4. Note to the footsoldiers of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office: I know none of you can read, so hopefully some charitable RP devotees will take the time to pass this advice on to you. Please do not run people over with your golf carts, make unnecessarily threatening remarks to peaceful concert-goers or push young women carrying their small children. You already have a reputation for being part of one of the more corrupt police departments in the country, so there's no need to widen the chasm between you and the citizenry with bullying and violent rhetoric.
5. The Polyphonic Spree get a huge thumbs up for an elaborately choreographed and costumed show as well as their fantastic cover of "Live and Let Die."
6. Spoon get an unenthusiastic shrug from the Park. It's not their fault, really. They're just more of a mixtape band than a festival band.
7. Julius Airwave get five gold stars for a charismatic, energetic and thoroughly uplifting set. Despite the aforementioned thuggery from the cops, their show was a great close to the festival. Fun times had by all. Can't wait for next year.
